For years now the Western powers, the US and Britain in particular, have touted democracy as the cure for the unending conflict in the Middle East. As this briefing shows, several countries tried it. But when Hamas won outright what were arguably the cleanest and fairest elections to be held in the region so far, in the Palestinian territories, the West reacted by outlawing them.
