Spain and Portugal: Hoping for another golden age

Spain and Portugal once bestrode the world, but then fell into a long decline which ended with dictatorship and economic stagnation. Since joining the EU in 1986 both countries have enjoyed a revival of spirit and and substantial economic improvement. Spain in particular has once again become a force in the world, its influence growing on both sides of the Atlantic, and even even in the Muslim world of which it was once a part. In this issue we look at the history and contemporary circumstances of these two countries on Europe's western promontory.
