Reinventing NATO: New friends, new enemies
NATO, created in 1949 to defend Western Europe from the Soviet Union, has never had to fight a war in its Treaty area. But since 1991, with UN authority, it has helped to give a stunning demonstration of the West's military power in the Gulf War, and has been drawn into peace-support action in the Balkans.
As NATO approaches its 50th birthday and prepares to admit three new members, this briefing looks at how the alliance is changing, and asks whether, in some respects at least, it may not be becoming the kind of international, multinational, force envisaged in the UN Charter.
