The Global Village: Challenges for a shrinking planet
The 'Global Village' means different things to different people - universal neighbourliness, mass tourism, global television and the internet, the wide dispersion of foreign-made goods, the out-sourcing of business production and services, the power of the money markets and multinational companies, global concerns over human rights and the environment. No other phrase so completely encapsulates the hopes, fears and uncertainties of our times.
UGI has looked at many specific aspects of globalisation in past briefings, from international organisations such as the UN, the European Union, the WTO and NAFTA, to multinational companies and environmental issues such as the seas, biodiversity, the food chain and the climate. In this briefing we try to draw these many threads together, and explore the way globalisation has both shrunk the planet and accentuated its diversity.
