Weapons of War: The challenge of disarmament

There are few global issues as emotive or complex as that of global disarmament. Yet in the past decade surprisingly wide-ranging treaties and agreements have been reached, aimed at making the world a safer place. Since 1987 there have been substantial reductions in the size of military arsenals, both nuclear and conventional. Important new international agreements have been made to outlaw chemical weapons and anti-personnel landmines.

Yet much of this is more apparent than real, owing more to technological advances which give more 'bang for a buck'. The boundaries between defence and offence are ever more blurred, and the arms trade continues to flourish. Arms production is becoming globalised, turning it into a business like any other. This briefing describes the current state of play in the frightening world of arms and disarmament.
