The Conquest of Disease: An impossible dream?
Only a few years ago, advances in drug development, genetic research and surgical techniques were widely proclaimed to herald the end of the great endemic and pandemic diseases which have plagued mankind throughout history. Yet in the last decade, tuberculosis has returned as a major killer. new strains of malaria are ever more resistant to drugs, AIDS has spread with frightening speed across the planet, and terrifying new diseases like Ebola and BSE have appeared on the scene. Meanwhile, the widespread, often indiscriminate, use of antibiotics and pesticides has resulted in microbes and insects which are more resistant and harder to control.
This UGI sets out the facts as best we know them today, and tries to answer the nagging question: "Are we losing the battle against disease?".
