Avoiding Gridlock: The role of public transport

As private ownership and use of motor cars has increased, road congestion has become a growing problem, along with air pollution and, perhaps, global warming. Public transport is often advocated as a solution to the problem of urban gridlock. Can travelling by new bus and rail systems replace the majority of car journeys? While the problems of overcrowded roads and gridlocked cities are not caused by motor cars alone, they clearly play a major part, and it is in decisions about personal transport that the individual citizen can most easily get involved. This briefing studies the present and possible future roles of public transport, with examples of actual and forecast developments around the world.
