The countries of sub-Saharan Africa present huge diversity. Great optimism is justified in some regions, bleak pessimism in others. There is no doubt that Africa has more than its fair share of world poverty, conflict and suffering. Yet the vibrancy of Africa's many cultures, its natural wealth, and the political and economic reforms which seem to be gathering pace, provide some hope for an African renaissance.
