Poland was the first Eastern Bloc country after World War II to put a non-communist government in power. Since the victory of Solidarity in 1989, Poland has been rapidly transforming itself into a western- oriented free market economy. With former communists now back in power, Poland's economic reforms have continued, along with moves towards EU and Nato membership.
