World Population: Still the biggest problem?

World population is now 6.3 billion, compared with 2.5 billion in 1950 and only 1 billion in 1830. By 2050 it seems likely to reach 9 billion. Over 90% of this growth will take place in developing countries, many of which have serious social, economic and environmental problems. Some are seeing rapid economic growth and becoming massive new consumer societies. What are the implications of the continuing growth of the world population?
