Tension in Turkey: Democracy, Islam and military power
Terrorist bombs in Turkey have added to the stresses on this key NATO member already struggling to reconcile its Asian-Islamic history with potential EU membership. Ever since its foundation by Atatürk in 1923, Turkey has been strongly orientated towards the West, but its Ottoman roots are in Asia. This inner conflict may grow as Turkey becomes more democratic and the international 'war on terrorism' focuses on Islamic extremism. We examine the tensions in present-day Turkey.
