Uniting Europe: Risks and rewards of EU enlargement
In a recent survey only 25% those questioned (just 10% in Britain) could name three of the 10 countries about to enter the European Union in 2004. A full 44% could not name a single one. Yet the coming enlargement is much the most important development since the introduction of the Euro. Furthermore the same 10 countries are also joining NATO. As Europe's frontiers stretch rapidly eastwards, the very definition of `Europe' is in question - Turkey, which shares a border with Iraq, is pressing to enter, and can Russia remain outside for ever?
Enlargement is an economic and political project, but it also has a moral dimension. This briefing sets out the facts.
