Losing the Earth: Land abuse and soil erosion
Most life ultimately depends upon the soil. Yet the Earth's fragile covering of soil is fast being degraded. The combined effects of water and wind erosion, chemical contamination, compaction, salinisation and waterlogging amongst others, have great reduced the fertility and extent of the planet's soil resources. As much as two-thirds of agricultural land worldwide has been degraded in some way.
This UGI explains how the degradation occurs, and what needs to be done to counter a threat which is as serious as terrorism, but rarely makes the headlines.
