World Fishing: Beyond sustainability
Global sea catches quadrupled between 1950 and 1990 but now appear to have reached a plateau. Indeed, for many important species catches are declining because of over-fishing. With too many high-tech ships chasing a limited supply of fish, prices are rising and stocks dwindling. Can fisheries management such as the EU has just announced save the day? Will the poorer nations be priced out of a valuable food source.
