Algeria: A society divided
In 1992 elections in Algeria, which the Islamic Salvation Front looked set to win, were abruptly cancelled by the military authorities, sparking off a prolonged period of virtual civil war in which as many as 100,000 people have died.
The enmity between fundamentalists and liberals is just the most visible of several deep-rooted divisions which scar Algerian society and hold back the progress of this oil-rich country.
